It is easy to complain about the "holistic admissions" process at our most selective universities, but a growing population in a country where the admissions process has become increasingly nationalized, while the number of seats at Harvard et al. has stayed constant, will lead to more qualified applicants being rejected, no matter how one defines qualified.
