Just wanted to give you heads up, you might not face anything like this, but my dd's first social studies test this year she failed. She was very upset. But it made it clear that she had no idea how to study and had to learn. Thankfully the teacher lets them re-take one test/quarter. She is ending the year now with all As in honors classes. At the time she failed the test some people questioned our decision, when in fact that reinforced the need for the skip. Also, math sometimes resulted in tears (if I can't do this immediatel I must be stupid) but she worked through it and I think we have made progress on the perfectionism front. It was a very positive decision all around for my dd. Good luck!
And the gap year in Europe sounds great!
