No one ( not the psych, the gifted services officer, his teachers) thinks he has ADHD but there are periods when he goes into a zone. It's obvious from talking to him when he's in one of these that he's checked out mentally, and it's hard (impossible?) to get through to him.
I'm not sure if this is helpful, but my DS10 can go from happy and alert to grouchy and distracted when he has:
1. too much screen time
2. too much reading
3. not enough sensory stimulation
4. sensory overload
5. poor quality or not enough sleep
6. or sometimes for no reason I can determine!
