On my DDs critical thinking math assignments she not only has to show her work but write a complete sentence that justifies their answer.

Her first time she wrote "I wrote 12 because it is the answer."

Needless to say, that did not count for justification.

I did'nt really like it at first, but seeing how much my DD has grown in this area, I have become a fan.
