I finally read this book over the weekend. I got it from the library, so I am out no money. Definitely worth the trip to the library. smile I thought Amy Chua was a very witty writer, and I would shelf the book in the humorist section. Yes, she did some things I wouldn't ever do, but I could understand some of it, and even relate, after reading the book.

The excerpts published in magazines/newspapers certainly did their job! The publisher was wise in picking those selections.

Oh well, I guess I took this book too much to heart. I actually have a Lulu times ten, and I spend half my life trying to manage him without traumatizing him (or my self), that reading what Chua did just drove me nuts. I took it all at face value, didn't realize most of the book was meant to be funny. I still don't think writing the book when Lulu is so young is a good idea, but, oh well, if her daughters are okay with the book, judging by Sophie's letter, then who am I to be so upset. Maybe deep down inside I wish I was stricter with my kids, lol.

As the joke goes: Right next to the book "How to Raise Perfect Children" on the Fantasy/SF Shelf.

I do agree that writing about one's kids lives so publicly is to be discouraged. I think I share at least that curiosity about the 'road not taken.' Nice to know that in the end, even a Tiger Mom has to bend in the face of a Lulu-style kid.

I have carried this 'joke' in my head for many years:
What if Genetic Engineering someday allows a whole bunch of supersuccessful OG parents to have PG (Lulu-style) babies? Won't they be in for a shock! Then I'll be understood finally!

    Peace,
    Grinity
