Tamara Fisher has an update on RTI & Gifted at Unwrapping the Gifted: http://blogs.edweek.org/teachers/unwrapping_the_gifted/2010/03/rti_and_gifted_-_revisited.html
I'd missed her original post but the update got my attention from hearing RTI discussed at some general school meetings. I'd assumed it was just about struggling learners but was surprised to read:
    Quote
Essentially, RTI is the practice of: (a) providing high-quality instruction/intervention matched to all students needs and (b) using assessment to determine learning rate and level of performance to (c) make important educational decisions to guide instruction."
Have any of you seen a school implementing RTI with the intention to meet all student's needs? A quick Google of "RTI and Gifted" showed some states have addressed this on paper at least.

Inky, The public schools here in Florida claim they use rti for all students including gifted. I have not seen it in action for gifted, though. My husband and I attended the administrators/teachers evening meeting a couple of months ago(it was open to the public, but there was only one other parent there) describing how great their (Florida's) services are for exceptional students...they kept repeating "including gifted." Yet, all their RTI data showed how they help kids who are not performing well reach the level of their classmates. The lecturer also said that RTI is now a requirement and teachers were required to "get on board." It was like she was saying, "Come on, do it, you will like it!" So yes, on paper it is there, but I don't think anyone is sure how to implement it, and it almost seems like they are making it voluntary for the teachers to participate.... The meeting was in January, on my birthday. I remember the details because I really really wanted to go and made my husband come along as my birthday present...and I was SO disappointed. Nan

Interesting...just got this in my e-mail:
    Quote
TAG (The Association for the Gifted) is holding a symposium on RtI for the Gifted on April 21 at the Opryland Hotel in Nashville as part of the Council for Exceptional Children Convention. You can register for the symposium separately from the convention registration. RtI is such an important topic in schools, and this symposium will highlight how RtI can be used with children and young people who are gifted and talented.
The flier and registration form are attached.
