Thank you all. I have calmed down a bit and am going to just try to take it one step at a time and enjoy it.
Yippee! That's the spirit!
...So she really didn't have a clue looking at 3+2 etc. So this is good. I just ordered some 1st grade math stuff for her to work on, so it should be a good fit.
Just don't be too surprised that the 'fit' only last a 'short' period of time. It may be hours or months, but it will not be 6 months or a year. Anyone want to start a betting pool?
I'd wager that if you gave her the assessment again, now that she has seen the + sign, she would be up over 70%. You might want to save on the shipping and try the second grade Math assessment soon. Actually you may want to start trying to figure out the 'DI-PI' method of mentoring your daughter. To put it simply: Pre-test, introduce the specific material that your daughter didn't know already, Post-test, move on and repeat. See:
http://www.davidsongifted.org/db/Articles_id_10248.aspxBeyond testing: Applying a mentor model for young mathematically talented students
Diagnostic Testing Prescriptive Instruction (DT→PI) is a beyond-level model developed for use with talented junior high and high school students... The DT→PI method can be adapted for effective use with elementary students who are extraordinarily talented in mathematics, using a mentor..
The idea isn't to speed her up, but to match her natural speed so that her motivation is fanned instead of smothered.
Love and More Love,
