I just gave DD 2.10 the K12 math placement tests just for the heck of it. I was floored....we have never covered any of this, and she got ALL but 1 of the K level right. She missed one on money, but she scored 14 out of 15 on Semester 1 K, and 15 out of 15 semester 2 K. According to this she would be placed in 1st semester of 1st grade math! And it sys to keep testing till they do not pass, which I didn't do. I did not test assesment 3 which is 1st grae 1st semster material, although I printed it out so I will see how she does. Although I am a little scared to give it to her.

Really there were things I have no idea how she knew. Some fractions, and volume, etc. She's not even 3 yet. How will she ever cope in school? Okay. I am guessing I should breath. I really thought she wouldn't pass them. Just was curious to see since she as been self exploring addition and subtraction as of late.

Breathing sounds like an excellent idea.

You don't have to give all the assesments on the same day, but do keep going until she doesn't pass. And keep your documentation - I have a cardboard file box that I just throw stuff into.

Our little females are so good at reading their adults, that many of them won't show what they know until we step up to the plate and give them something to swing at. So give yourself a breather, and get back to your printer and follow those directions. She is who she is - and thankfully you won't be all alone trying to figure this out as she gets closer to school age.

Go back to '5 levels of Giftedness' and see how long it takes to finish elementary school for the upper LOGs. Not long at all, actually.

Perhaps just breathing isn't enough. You might want to get a paper bag too.

No great words of wisdom other than try to remember even though this is a scary thing, it is also a really good thing. There will be a way and you will figure it out as time goes on.

Thank you all. And I think I may need that paper bag too passthepotatoes. I don't think she will pass the first grade one looking at the material, but hey I could be wrong. Although I know some of it she will get right. I totally freaked out and started thinking how will we do this...and I don't want her to be reay for college when she is 13...LOL. See I tend to freak out an get ahead of myself. I don't know what I am so surprised for. She is firmly a level 4 based on Dr. Ruf's levels, but I guess to just see it right there on paper in front of me shocked me a little. I am going to give her the next assessment tomorrow. And if she is in the mood I am going to give her the language arts assesment.

I called a very good friend of mine who even though non of her children were gifted, somehow she totally gets me and what I worry about. And she calmed me down and reminded me, that A. DD has a gift and it is a blessing, an B. If she is finished with school by the time she is 13 she doesn't have to go away to college, and now you can go to college online LOL. Thank goodness for this board an friends who get it.

Well...it could happen. It did to us and you know what it can still be okay. Better than okay even.

Such gifts bring enormous possibilities and that really is a wonderful thing. If you haven't yet read the Parent's Guide to Gifted Children that's where I'd suggest you go next.

How funny, those K12 placement tests were a eye opener for us too! We too had no idea how our DD then only 3, happened to know enough to pass the assesment tests. We even had to fudge her birthdate, since they only have Math assesments for K entrance and up. We did call the placement coordinator, and had them create an account for us to "pretend DD was older and ready to take the Language Arts assesment" Boy were we floored, when those results came back.

Amazedmom, we could have DD's cut from the same cloth. Mine just seems to know things without ever having studied them. We liken it to her being born with all the answers to everything already programmed in her brain, and she is just going through her life being exposed to everyday things, and they then trigger the opening of the vault and all the pieces fall in place....and BAM, she just knows it!

Our concern has been, that she will be bored having to sit through everyone else learning how to do what she already knows, however, we need her to show us that she knows how to arrive at Mathematical answers. (so many times, we have heard he say...."it is just the correct answer, so I wrote it down")

LMAO! That's the answer DS was writing in his math workbooks last year. "Solve the problem blah blah...now explain how you know this is the answer" and he would write, "because it's right." For some reason, they don't always find that useful.

I think that it's a wonderful thing to have a very gifted child too. I have anxiety because my child is so unhappy in school and so far we haven't been able to find the right placement for him. I'm anxious because I'm afraid that if we don't find something soon he's going to give up on school and learning and his abilities won't matter much anymore
