A quick update on DS6, we have to leave a great school at the end of this school year. The school has been great and a wonderful fit for our son. Unfortunately the distance has become too much of a hardship on the family. This has been a very hard choice for our family. His current school has provided a peer group for him, subject acceleration, and he just likes going their. The problem is that it is 1hr each way to the school in heavy traffic, and on a bad day up to 2hrs. We have a DS16 in a local school and cannot move until 2011, I cannot see moving him in his senior year. So now what. DS6 was accepted this year into DYS, and we had an Achievement test completed, IQ test from last year, and a letter from his current teacher. With this in hand we approached our local Public ES. (1 block from our home). We where active with the school last year in K, and for the 6 years our DS16 went their. The school has agreed to a one year skip to third, (They believe a two year skip may be too much, they may be correct on the writing part) and acceleration in Math to 4th grade. We are pushing for allowing him to complete math on-line with John Hopkins instead, we are going to try it this summer. We are hoping that this works out well. Our goal is to move closer to the other school next year after DS16 graduates. (If they will accept DS6 back). I am trying to look at the good parts of this, time for cub-scouts, music lessons, sports, etc A number of people on this board that helped us to decide originally to go to the Private School, it has been a great choice, thank you or your advice. Our plan is to return the following year.

Sounds like it's working out as best as it can, especially if you can move closer to the private school in a year.

I remember a thread about multi-year skips a little while back. One or more people reported that they go better in single-year chunks. I'm inclined to agree --- my DS will be pretty much doing a second single-year skip at a new school next year. Looking back on it, the school he'll be attending was offering him a de facto double skip last year, but we opted for a single year skip with extra acceleration in math at a different school instead. I hope it works out. He'll be closer to the ages of the kids at the new school this coming year.

Is it me, or are people reporting more success stories regarding whole-grade and subject acceleration the last few months?

    Edwin,

thank you for the update. I'm sorry the school worked out wonderfully but it just too far. It sounds like you do have a plan in place to return that school in a year so that is definitely great news!!!

That sounds like a great plan, I'm glad the PS is working with you.

Good luck to DS next school year.
