I have been lurking on this site for two years now reading everything and finding wonderful guidance and support.

However, we are now at the point where we really would like to meet up with other parents locally who have younger gifted children and who might be able to educate us as to the local resources that are available. I've tried contacting our local school system and was not happy with the "wait until she is in 3rd grade" approach.

If there are any other parents or resources around the Wilmington, NC area, please let us know. Thank you!

    Hi Marisombra,
Welcome to the Board. One site that might help you is the NC NCAGT website NC PAGE
There is a section that lists the Board of Directors of NCAGT. I would find the one for your county and see if there is a local chapter.
    Good luck!

When in Wilmington recently, I drove by a sign announcing the future site of The Wilmington Academy of Arts and Sciences. The website says it is "an independent private school for academically motivated and gifted students in grades four through eight."

    Wilmington Academy

It sounds like you have a child younger than fourth grade, but perhaps the people at this school would know of some resources/local groups for young gifted kids in your area.

    Hi Marisombra!
    Welcome!
I've never tried this, but if you do- let me know if it works, ok:
How about posting a sign at the local library to start a book club for (whatever age your kids are) who are interested in reading books like (whatever books your children like) and put up your phone number?

Or try connecting with the 'secular' homeschooling community - a good deal of thoes folks have gifted children, although 'why test or use the label if you can go at your own pace anyway?'

    Best Wishes,
    Grinity

It's true. You do have to be careful with using the word GT with them--a fact that annoys me, personally--but the secular homeschooling community is a great place to find like-minded people.

Thank you all for the suggestions. I will puruse some of them and report back if I find some good resources to share.
