The most important thing you need when learning to type is an actual will to learn--not just to pass some program or satisfy your parents, IMHO. When I was younger, I loved to type stories on Word and I'd often type for an hour or so without any nagging from my parents. Then we had to do a typing program in school, and I progressed way fastercthan the other students. Right now I can type up to 153 WPM, but my time usually hovers around the 130's.

Also, IMing is bad if you can't type correctly. You end up forgetting to capitalize and using abbreviations like "u" for "you".
