Hi Everyone,
Our son is 2e, 9 yrs in 4th grade, IQ in 99.9% with “stealth” dyslexia, reads above grade level but avoids it, spelling very difficult and any form of writing is torture. We’ve been trying to work with the small private catholic school he’s been at since kindergarten and it just really isn’t working. Seems to be hugely dependent on the teacher, this year is going just ok, 2nd grade was awful. We tried a stint at a gifted school last year but it seems like with every school/teacher, at the start of the year, they go through the lip service of understanding dysgraphia and saying they will let him use the suggested accommodations (limited work, extra time, talk to text) but after a few weeks we find out they aren’t taking the time to do any of it, and they start admonishing him for not finishing work, not trying hard enough, not paying attention. This is always with written work. He loves learning and really wants to like school but they just can’t seem to understand that this really is a learning difference and he’s not just unmotivated. We toured a project based private school in La Jolla where we live, but after the meeting with the director we were assured it was project based and no busy work/worksheets etc., we met the teachers who were all very young and several of them mentioned workbooks being a basis of the work they do. Ugh. My poor kid is so stressed and frustrated and bored out of his mind. Just hoping someone here can suggest a good school for gifted and dyslexic/dysgraphic, possibly in either the San Diego area (where we currently live) or Salt Lake/Sandy/Park City/Logan area where we are considering. Or if anyone knows of a great school for this anywhere. Thank you!!🙏🏻
