Phooey. Just checked in to look at eema's article. Please post the link again!

The whole thread made me queasy, though- beginning with the first post. It all seemed to be based on shaky assumptions that we don't like people making.

I can understand why the thread was deleted. It came across as...well, condescending. IMO, it played into negative stereotypes about "gifted" people looking down their noses at others. A few messages were quite pointed in that regard, and that tone was called out by two other members who had negative reactions to the thread.

Like was said earlier here, I saw it as an object lesson in how not to communicate.

    Agreed.
I think that thread, ironically, was a good example of when to stop a discussion when there is nothing productive taking place. However, that's something hard to do with so many people participating in said discussion, especially given the circumstances of the post and the general reaction felt -- which I think is another good lesson, of why we need the mods to step in when (and hopefully before) things start to get out of hand.

Very true - I'll admit I bought into the thread and found it very hard to keep my emotion out of it - so I'll apologise to anyone I offended! At the same time, I'm kind of proud of this board for being able to say yes we love our gifties but we do not think they are better than the average population.
