Last I saw about 16 hours ago, it was reasonable. I'm curious as to why it was removed.

It seemed a reasonable topic for a gifted forum-- how to debate when there is an impasse based on comprehension, rationality, or degree of open-mindedness of one's interlocutor. For gifties, knowing when to cut a conversation loose is an important skill, as is knowing how to communicate effectively in different situations.

Maybe the mods would be kind enough to chime in.

I agree that knowing when to say when is a critical skill-- and furthermore, I think that honestly and compassionately instilling in our children a sense that they, in spite of having the cognitive horsepower that they possess, do not have any entitlement to "tell" others on any number of subjects--

well, that part is priceless. I was enjoying that thread as a terrific object lesson, to be perfectly blunt-- which isn't intended offensively to anyone participating in it, but it is what I honestly think.

Seeing such a clear example of how the communication strategy employed and the underlying motivations and beliefs of gifted people can derail the efforts to connect with others humans-- that was very valuable. In my opinion.

This is ground that we had to cover quite specifically with my skillfully manipulative, socially adroit DD16, who loves people and has mostly been convinced that she'd REALLY make a benevolent dictator. We had to gently correct her efforts (mostly undetected by others) to manipulate her friends and family in order to cause them to "make better decisions" and "see things the Right Way." Yes, she truly believed that she was doing those people favors.

That still doesn't make it right to shove one's vision (true or not) down others' throats in the name of her superior reasoning ability.

She's not a better person because she's brighter. She has things to learn from people who have IQs of 60-70, and I'm elated that she knows this.

Oh, there was so much that was missing from that thread, really...

A lively and contentious thread without at least one JonLaw post is a terrible thing to waste.

It was an excellent object lesson on several levels. Agree it's a topic worth discussing but wonder if it's better framed within the context of gifted children and communication styles/skills. I don't think OP meant to be offensive and was inviting intellectual discussion, but the topic did evoke some fairly negative (emotional) responses--maybe mods felt it was a bit too far off the mark if the mark is gifted advocacy?

That was among the interesting posts I would say were worth a second look. Also ivy's tips for communication.

eema, I read about that debate where the inmates of a maximum security prison took on Harvard (world champions of 2014!) and beat them in a debate about undocumented migrants. I thought that it was very relevant to that vanished thread too.
(thinking of other people as having a lower IQ because they appear to be so or because they don't understand the debater or because they avoid conflict and refuse to debate is guaranteed to raise hackles and shut down threads)

ETA: The inmate team has an ongoing rivalry with the West Point Debate team:
