Sorry, madeinink. Losing a pet is such a tough road for all involved. We went through this last year with our cat and at the time our dog was also very ill (since recovered, thank goodness). I wasn't out of control but I did tear up in front of the kids. I think it's helpful for them to know that adults have feelings, too. We made a big deal of the cat after he was put down-- the kids wrote letters/drew pictures and they sang a little song. They still talk about him all the time.
