my daughter was tested aged 3:11 which I know is very young but we needed to do it for early school entry. She scored 99.6 percentile or IQ 140. There was a 20 point difference between verbal and performance scales. The psych said normally this could be a possible issue but given that both were in the gifted range, she was not concerned. My feeling from observing the session was that she found 1.5 hours straight very tiring and I wonder whether there could be some under estimation going on. On the other hand, her skills are definitely more advanced in the verbal area esp reading. Any suggestions, insight? Should we retest later on? Thanks

I am still new to this as well (my DS 4 was tested on the WPPSI IV last month). Did she get the WPPSI III or IV? Either way, with this score, wouldn't she have hit some ceilings (supposedly, the ceilings are higher on WPPSI IV)? If so, there may well be some underestimation. Also, in my son's case, he got a low score on working memory - according to the report, he didn't look at the pictures as long as he should have, so likely some underestimation there (it must have dragged down his FSIQ - as his GAI is well into the 140s...). He also apparently fooled around during the processing speed parts of the test...So again likely some underestimation there. We couldn't observe, however, so this is taken just from the report. And he was tested for 2+ hours. They ARE still young. In our case, the psych was not concerned either...

During the (timed) processing speed test, she leaned over towards me and whispered "When is this lady going to GO??" She was tested using the WPPSI III, only hit 1 ceiling for vocab. Also because she was 3.11, they had to use norms for a 4-4.3 year old so another reason why I suspect some underestimation......

I not concerned so much at the possibility of underestimation - the assessment served our purpose for the early entry application. I'm more interested in the 20 point discrepancy between the verbal and performance scales.

    Thanks Portia that's very helpful!

She is a bit behind her classmates in drawing/handwriting but I had put that down to her being well over a year younger than the majority. She is also left handed which we were told can make the writing process a bit more challenging.

She does gravitate more toward verbal type activities e.g reading role play over blocks or puzzles and the psych recommended we focus more on lego and drawing. She had a third grade reading and comprehension level at 3.11 so I think its just her area of strength. Always has been highly verbal, early talker etc. Since she has started school she is very interested in writing and does so at every opportunity e.g birthday cards etc which I think is great.
