so, on the way home my son stated "mom I told my friend that he should go to gifted with me". I tried to explain to my son all the reasons why that may not be possible and why comments like this may make his friend feel bad. After my explanation my son stated "but mom, he has all As so he is smart; - with me people think I am not smart".
How sad is this? It is sad for the friend who the school will not test, sad for my son who is only in gifted because we could afford to privately test him, and sad that in 4th grade he thinks others think he is stupid (I assume because he does not have As?).

It's a shame these things happen. We are trying to prove our ds is gifted based on what staff have identified. But his IQ scores are average. The scores don't fit his achievement or observable behavior.

So we as parents support our kids. Despite the labels despite what others think, we know the potential. I no one else understands or sees the beauty of their intelligence, we do.

I found it interesting that Mendel couldn't pass a teaching exam but gave us the basis of genetics. Schools and grades are an indicator of measurable and common characteristics and information. You can't test a persons ability to choreograph dance or create art but they are forms of intelligence an ability.

    We have to believe!
