My son isn't naturally compliant. He likes to follow his passions and teach himself. He has been goal-oriented from the day he was born. He has no need for externally-imposed structure or direction, and chafes against it. He is not seeking a teacher to teach him, he is seeking to explore and discover the world on his own.
That describes my son perfectly, I just could never have said it so positively. I thought he would enjoy creative play with 3 year olds, but after enrolling him in a play time (I advocated for him to be in a slighter older age range even though he's 2.25), I realized the other kids were still not ready for the kind of pretend play he likes. The best fit for him to pretend play is with our 6-8 yr old neighbors who come over to jump on our trampoline. Oh dear.
The right teacher is key here. Creative kids can "push buttons" if they are paired with adults who don't "get" them. Meet the teachers and see how they respond to your ds. You will probably quickly see if they encourage the creativity or try to contain it or direct him to certain tasks.
This gives me hope. Definitely an aha! topic for me, thanks.
