I was on Ravelry and saw that one of the groups had a thread called 'Shameless Self Promotion' - is that allowed here?

Can we have a whole thread where folks talk about their commercial (Humor alert:mercenary?) connections to the gifted world? I have to admit that I do daydream of quitting my day job and spending 40 hours a week helping gifted kids, but somehow, like crochet, I don't think it would be as much fun.

When my son was a baby, I was desperate to figure out a way to stay home with him. I even looked into doing 'Indexing' work (I like to read books too.) I stuck it out, and things got so much better, but I do wish that there were lots and lots of open avenues to making pocket money from home-based, or at least child-friendly based environments.

All the great movements I can think of have a least a small portion of their members doing work-for-money that is community supported.

    ((shrugs and more shrugs))

So, do we get to see your crochet work? You left out your own shameless self promotion!

when the kids were little and I was going crazy I discovered this particular niche of sculpting and dollmaking. i had been a silversmith and graphic designer, lots of fine arts background and I loved to sculpt. I gave it a try and loved it. I've never had the time to put myself into it 100% because of family duties and when a good freelance graphic design gig comes along I take it wink so, here is my shameless self promotion www.enchantedwhimsies.com

I did have a blog a few years ago where i reviewed toys, sites, games, video games etc that would appeal to gifted kids. it was fun but not as creative as I needed to be and i kind of drifted away from it when it felt like work. I get all crazy if I am not making stuff and being creative! DH says I am like Richard Dreyfuss in Close Encounters of the Third Kind. It's kinda true!

Thanks smile I mainly use a professional quality polymer clay called Prosculpt. I am about to try something new with Ball Jointed Dolls but I am so busy I haven't gotten past the planning!

WOW!!!!! Snape was amazing!!!! Do you only make one of each creation or are you able to make a mold and make several? I just love your little goth gal with the tophat, they're all great! What talent.

My daughter sculpts too using that Fimo stuff but a couple years ago she made a really cool blind pig with glasses, a top hat and a walking stick and to my absolute horror it melted in the oven so now I am afraid to harden anything else and they are all so fragile frown

AGG - I love to crochet, but I don't love photographing what I make or uploading photos...

I might be teaching a crochet class at our local yarn store, if there is interest.

Wow!!! Beautiful faeries! I wish I could make something like that with my hands. I can't even draw all that well.

I have a green living website I am working on and brand new website for early learners I just started. I'm a little shy to share just yet. Plus, my anonymity goes out the window if I do lol.

My entire business started from trying to be organised enough to keep ahead of Aiden when he was at home (under age 3). It's now been going for nearly 2 years and is growing daily... Fun educational products and kits for kids aged 10 months - 12 years. I developed my own edible play doh (chocolate and peanut butter) and edible fingerpaints. I put my own kits together to strengthen skills, teach new things etc. Now I also buy and resell items that fit my idea of fun and educational (Leapfrog, Priddy books, games etc).

It then grew into teaching moms and nannies how to stimulate their toddler and pre schooler at home (ie how to build activities in their day that they can enjoy) and then school break workshops for kids (Science, maths, natural disasters, crafts etc). Now I am working on adding language courses for kids aged 3+ as there is nothing here like that.

There are a LOT of gifted parents from the school and all over that support me: I do monthly kit programs as well, where I create an individualised monthly program based on each child's ability and interests. This is new and only now starting to take off nicely.

So this entire business has totally grown out of my desire to be ready for my kids to learn - and the range is extended when they show a new interest or when customers specifically ask for something for their kids - I custom make a lot of things for ADHD, Kinetic learning, auditory learning, extra motor, Downs kids, Autistic kids and of course for a range of gifties too.

Right now my pre-release orders for the leappad are my biggest deal laugh and have me dancing up and down the house regularly.

Bonus: Not paying retail prices for most of our books, games, toys and learning materials.

I am also working on a support site for Gifted families here in SA (with another mom of 2 gifted girls). there is nothing like that here and we desperately need it.
