Now I have questions... lol.
The current kindergarteners take the test over 4 days. They want to give it to EJ over 2 days. Do you think that may cause a problem?

oo and now I am nervous too

eta .. this is in preparation to skip kindergarten. He needs to score in the 90 percentile of the spring MAP in reading and math

I think mine took it over two days in Kindergarten so I don't think it would be a problem. You might want to explain how the test works to him. Let him know when he answers a question correctly, the next question will be harder so eventually he'll get to a question that he doesn't know the answer. This gives the teachers information about what he's ready to learn next. Is he comfortable using a mouse and computer?

P.S. Ask him to remember the number that pops on the screen at the end of the test. This will be the RIT score and you can check the percentile using this link:

I had him take the DORA last week to give him an idea of what to do (and to give me an idea of where he is in reading). I watched him tale it and the question did get harder as he answered correctly just like the MAP test. I have no worries about him scoring high enough in math as he told my first grader today the answer of 4 x 3 = 12 (she knew it just not as quick as him lol). He needs a 170 in reading and I just cant figure out where that is exactly to know how he will do. He did score very high on DORA. It suggested he work on 5th grade stuff (he is still an emerging reader with lexile around 100- 150)

I think we may be fine with all of those concepts. He just isn't a very strong reader at this point. He is at about a mid kinder level. I just spoke to the principal..I asked these questions but not in this order
1. I understand kinder takes the test over 4 sessions ( EJ is taking in 2 sessions). Will there be a break for the restroom/water?
2. can he have a water bottle
3 where is the test taking place
4 will there be distractions (ppl walking in and out)
5 how soon do we know the results
6 after we sign in in the office where do we go
7 after the results can we conference on his needs for next year (either way)

I was happy with the answers. He has met and spoken with EJ. EJ has met both the kinder teacher and my dd's first grade teacher and they all recommended to go with testing. If he doesn't qualify (I am still unsure about reading), they will do acceleration for math

Hi, frannieandejsmom. Exciting times! Our son took the MAP recently. It's my belief that it is not timed by design, which should always allow for restroom / water breaks. Our son (5) was given it in two sessions also. He seems to have sped through it, but I think that even taking time your son will probably take no more than an hour each time.

Based on the advice of someone here, I made sure to ask that he not be rushed at any point (again, that wasn't an issue for us but I thought I should mention it). Also, prime your son to resist if someone tries to rush him because he's the last one left.

Good luck! It sounds like you can't lose much either way. Get EJ pumped up at the chance to do his best, continue stressing that he needs to focus even on the easy ones and that he will get some wrong, and keep your fingers crossed.

He will be the only child taking the test. It will be administered by the school psychologist in her office (I think). There will be no distractions. EJ will have time between the tests to walk around and go to the washroom. EJ is a perfectionist and that worries me ... he wont want to answer if he wont get it correct. We have been talking all week about doing your best and if you dont know the answer to guess. They told me each day would take about an hour or more. That makes me think they wont rush him along. He also told me we sould have the results from the district (with scores) in about a week.

well... day one testing complete. He took one section of both reading and math today. He didn't remember the numbers at the end on the screen... neither did the school psychologist who is doing the tests with him. It took him about 25 minutes for each section. We finish tomorrow and should have the results late next week

testing is complete... now we await the results. I was told we should have them late next week but I'm not holding my breath as we still don't have spring MAP for my dd7 taken a month ago
