2) How to encourage her independent thinking. She easily takes the submissive role too often and I want to be sure that she is growing into a strong young lady who is ok with her own identity. I don't want her to get lost in the system.

Hey Dace - sorry about the gender thing! Somehow when I read the above I though I heard paternal love talking.
But this does put an interesting spin on things, now doesn't it? I'm going to suggest that you are going to have to set the example of how to be female, how to avoid letting others (including DHs) make decisions for you, and how to trust your mind to think independently.
Since you have already 'taken the first step' it sounds to me like you are on your way!
