I've been lurking for a while, and thought I should jump in and say hi. My son turned 6 in June, and started 1st grade this year. He has not been tested yet, so I don't know if he is classified as gifted or not. He is one of 2 children in his class in his reading group (at the end of K, he was reading at level 16 - they are expected to be at at level 3 at that point, and be at level 18 at the end of 1st. When assessed by his 1st grade teacher, she started him out at a level 24). He is in his own math group, his teacher said he is the only one at his level in 1st grade. Now - I know he is smart, but is he gifted ? He goes to a Title 1 school - we open enrolled him there as it is the local "Math, Science, Technology" school, and it is also closer to my daycare (which I run out of a house we don't live in) - so I can literally watch him walk to school, 1 1/2 blocks away. His teacher is meeting with the ULE (gifted) teacher this month, and after that there's a meeting with the teacher, math coach, counselor, team of teachers, and principal - yikes !! I presume we'll be discussing the ULE program, and his teacher also mentioned the possibility of him going to a 2nd grade classroom for math. I have been happy so far with his teacher - she gives him his own spelling words, as the 1st grade words are too easy (though he chooses to do them as well). She worked very hard at getting his math assessed - she realised that her assessment in the classroom wouldn't be enough, so brought the math coach in to assess him. She makes sure he has reading books that interest him - he can read harder ones, but right now her main focus is on him recalling story content, etc. He loves school, is ridiculously well behaved there (though at home we see the "real" him LOL), he plays soccer, and just joined the Tiger Cubs. OK - I think I'm done !! Oh - he's an only child, I had him 3 weeks before I turned 40 (dh was 47). OK - NOW I'm done smile I have really enjoyed reading the posts so far, and look forward to hanging around for a while smile
