ADD can affect how well a child performs on a test. But it can also affect how well a child learns new material, so a kid with a lot of potential who has ADD is often kept from accelerating in school because he has issues with distraction. This all snowballs, of course, and can make a kid with ADD look a lot less gifted than he might if given support and encouraged to move forward at a more challenging pace.
