Uh, yes, probably a good idea to work around the life owl thing. Apparently they have had quite a few problems with an overload of real life snowy owls arriving at raptor rescue centers in the UK after the movies started coming out...it appears they do NOT make good pets!
Edited to add that taking can2ks kids birthday wish more seriously might not have helped at all - after all,you COULDNT arrange for her to be invited to Hogwarts for real, right? She had to finally give up her dream that it might be for real after all, and turning it into a game might have been counterproductive, even.
Let her grieve.
