How old is he?

How old WOULD he be in the local collegiate setting?

How much experience do they have with very young matriculants?

How well does he do work that is too easy or too repetitive?

Do you have a feel for what his writing skill level and executive function is like relative to 17yo NT students? Relative to age-mates?
Check your state's laws RE: testing and GED. Some have very hard age-limits on it.

My cautions for you would be-- based on what you've shared-- that collegiate settings are often a minefield for those with social or executive maturity issues. I'd be concerned about the transition from "special school" (which sounds like a lovely and nurturing place-- kudos to finding that!!) to a less-nurturing college environment.

If you decide that early college is a good path forward, be sure to look into whether or not he could do a dual enrollment option and complete a high school diploma at the same time. While it's true that generally a high school diploma isn't going to be very useful, being without one DOES close some options off.
