My daughter went to an overnight camp (6 nights; 4 hours from home) last year when she was 7. She begged us to let her go. We weren't sure what to do because the camp was for kids aged 8 and up. Then, in the spring, went to a party for campers. The camp director (who knew our eldest pretty well) said she'd be fine.
So off she went.
She had a wonderful time and didn't cry until the day she had to go home. She's going back this year.
All that said, I think a lot depends on the kid. But if your son is asking you, it's a good sign (IMO).
