Ultra, our bridge to chapter books was comic books. DS6 started with used copies of children's comics (Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck) found at Half Price Books. Then Sonic the Hedgehog ("Archives" series, cheap at Amazon). Now he's reading the omnibus volumes of Asterix, which are large, every chance he gets, and he's less afraid to tackle a big book. Somewhere between Sonic and Asterix he dug into the Magic Tree House ones on his own. We will continue with comics and regular reading in parallel (Tintin is on my agenda, but so is The Trumpet of the Swan).
