I can hardly believe it, our youngest son age 6, just received notification that he was accepted into DYS!
Can anyone tell me if this has helped make a difference in a public, gifted education mandated school?

Congrats. It's so great to feel that your DC is recognized for ability. From what I've seen here, This does not always get school to try and meet the child's needs. Other times it does amazing things. It can be worthwhile to look at other options just incase. DYS can help you deal with the school and that in itself is a big relief. It's nice to have someone who gets it.
