I'm not saying u can't or you can. I'm posting these links mainly for lucounu, who I think was trying to explore ideas along the following lines. I posted a topic rather than pm because I see a lot of discussion of working memory, and this is relevant to that. W'ther or not what's in these links is true or not, I'm not sure. I might even have misinterpreted it.

According to this you can hold 5-7 things in your working memory for 10-20 seconds (without small kids around, lol). S'pposedly Increased learning occurs by enlarging the size of the info chunks we process inside our working memory, not by holding more, not by processing faster. If that's true that's explaination why "MOTS" worksheets are counter-productive. You're not making larger chunks of information to work with (like acceleration). You're just pushing the same size information through the same memory slot. At least if it's novel or new information (differentiation) you're Giving them something to play with with their declarative memory.

*Always correct me if I'm wrong, not that it will be the final answer, but you won't hurt my feelings and I'll explore a new direction as well as redirecting this train of thought.

The snippet is because imparted domain-transcendent self-regulatory cognition does not require previous knowledge of the subject. That one must be the enlarged chunk-juggling "processing memory". Domain-specific self-regulatory cognition is subject-knowledge dependent and must be from differentiated instruction. Nothing new here. HTH
