There are many really cool summer programs available to GT kids, especially those with qualifying ACT and SAT scores from academic competitions. In case anyone needs ideas, here are some listings. I would be grateful for additional links, as we have not committed to a program yet.

    Hi delbows,

I just perused those sites--excellent resources...so many possibilities.

We're trying ID Tech camp this summer. We'll see how it goes. Also trying jhu cty. Undecided for DS11 currently--he likes hands-on rather than lecture style classes(I think). So hard to decide when a kid likes many areas/subjects.

Has anyone done an ID Tech camp before? Any reviews? We have one very local to us and DS is just old enough.

DS did ID last year. He did it as a sleep away camp and had a really good time. It was his first sleep-away camp; he got his own dorm room, ate well, and made friends. Mostly he worked on his computer game and then they did camp stuff as well. The counselors were really fabulous and I have no real complaints.

Except I'm not really sure that he learned anything. Part of me felt like I could have just bought the game design program they used and DS could have worked on it in our basement in the morning and then he could have played games with neighborhood kids in the afternoon and gotten just as much out of it, except of course the great experience of being away from your parents for a full week. I guess I'm sayiing that although it was very professional and fun, it wasn't amazing. We're trying something completely different this year--a week of wilderness skills and animal tracking (for 1/4 the price of Tech camp!)

Wilderness skills and animal tracking!!!!! Wow that sounds fun. I think my kids would absolutely love that. I wonder if they have camps like that in my area. Could you give me some more information? Thanks!

Has your son read any books by Gary Paulsen? I highly recommend 'Hatchet', and I'm going to check out some other books he's written. 'Hatchet' is fiction, but he's also written nonfiction, and 'Hatchet' draws from his knowledge of survival techniques.

Hey thanks for the feedback on the Tech camps! They are so spendy and I was wondering if it was actually worth it for a 7 year old. If he'd learn a ton maybe, but it sounds like not-so-much.

It would be fun to have that software installed on a home computer though and then they could go much deeper with it than they could for a week (at $700).

The wilderness camp sounds wonderful! And the price is right too.
