Has anyone had their child retested with the Stanford Binet? I have read somewhere that the SB-IV might put a finer point on the IQ scores for children who test HG/PG.

My dd11 landed in the HG+ category from her WISC IV results and
her achievement scores qualify (I think) with Broad Math at 152 and Total Achievement at 149.

I go into a misty-eyed trance when I read the benefits of being a DYS -- imagine someone helping you with all this: grade skipping/acceleration/distance-learning. It is a lot to process!!

Celebrate - you found us, we're as much help as DYS on those issues. What we haven't found a way to reproduce is the social experiences of seeing you child with a bunch of kid who are 'similar enough' that you can finally see their true selves.
We've had such special times with the playdates and the Gatherings.

    But there is still -
    http://www.hoagiesgifted.org/conferences.htm
and if the NorthEast US isn't out of reach I'd recommend
Beyond IQ (BIQ) Boston April 29 - May 1, 2011
    in particular.

Oh, and there is the DYS possibility of Need based Financial Aid.

This is a particular validation that comes with DYS acceptance, that not only is your kid gifted, but that they are unusually gifted enough that the regular gifted program probably isn't even going to come close to meeting her academic needs. So you aren't crazy. Grinity Says So. (not as good as DYS acceptance, perhaps, but try to bask for a moment.)

That's right - your dd is close enough to DYS level to have all the headaches, you aren't making the whole thing up and Grinity Says So.

    Love and More Love,
    Grinity

Can you clarify what you mean when you say they are "excellent scores, especially given her age"? Is it harder to get higher scores when you're a little older?

Thank you Grinity for the validation. I am thrilled to have found this forum. And I appreciate how each post is treated with so much love and respect. I have a lot to learn, and there is a ton of information on this site.

We are in the middle of multiple transitions -- moving from Montessori to traditional, skipping a grade, deciding math placement. And of course we're looking at a few schools.

The conferences sound interesting. And now you've given me "permission" to go, I won't feel like such an impostor. smile

It would be eye opening to see dd with a group of kids more like her.

PM'ing is private. Go to "My Stuff" on the Menu Bar just over the discussion thread. Select "Messages". Select "New Private Message." Enter the user name(s) (e.g., Dottie) of the people you want to send it to. Then type in the message into the body.

You are no impostor - more like almost a Standard Deviation above the usual definitions of gifted! I love Dottie's advice to go at SAT or ACT - and would do that this spring, and then apply to Davidson with what you have. The tests are much less kind to 11 year olds than to 7 year olds - much less headroom.

As for Math placement, can you get the books that are used in various Math classes (or old final exams?) and see if the previous teachers would help give you an idea of where they think things might work best?

Lots of changes - good luck!

I would have never thought of the SAT at 11. smile wait until I run that past my dh.

I have her signed up to take the Explore test soon. With the school tests, placement tests, psych tests, and this Explore test she is kind of "tested" out. I think all these tests/transitions are making her a little anxious.

I thought that Davidson would only take one achievement-type test. The other needed to either be an IQ or a portfolio?

YSP looks at everything you have, even old IQ tests.
They do look at Explore, see http://www.davidsongifted.org/young...holars___Qualification_Criteria_384.aspx

but it's harder to show her unusualness as she gets closer to the ceiling. SATs are offered every month all the way to June 4th, so you have plenty of time to see how Explore goes.

Sorry to hear your dd is weary.

My dd12 took the SAT twice -- at age 10 and 11. We don't widely advertise that, though, since I don't want to look like a weird hothousing parent wink .
