What's the downside of going to 1st in the afternoon? The possibility of it stopping if they have another 1st grader they need room for is the biggest downside. Any others you know? Is he physically ready for all day/every day school?

What's the upside of going to 1st in the afternoon? He'll start associating with kids who will be in 2nd this fall, where you want him to be if I understand you correctly. He'll be introduced to different scheduling, teaching methods which may be different than K, but more like he'll encounter in 2nd.

Do you fear his current teacher will sabotage his success of K/1st split? Her comment about her experience disturbed me, as Dottie said, "tell her to check her baggage at the door".

Thanks, Bianca! The grade skip seems to be the best option available although I do see that in some ways it is less than ideal.

OHGrandma, I agree that going to 1st in the afternoons could be a great transition and I was excited about the idea until I talked to DS current K teacher. You are exactly right, I am concerned that she may try to sabotage him. I hope that I get a good feeling from the 1st grade teacher. I may get to talk to her next week.

She is a late June BD and one of the youngest. She is HG compared with PG older sister. She is far less mature than older sister was at this age. Indeed, she appears immature compared to grademates at times.
Same situation here. GS has always been perceived as less mature than norm for age/grade, althought the moment you start listening to him the perception changes. But how many adults actually listen to kids ?:-)
Happy to inform though, that the older he is, the less abvious/visible that trait has been. Maybe he is learning to stay within socially accepted norms?

    Thanks Ania,

Just to clarify DD5 is globally gifted and 99.9 on WPPSI, so it's not a real stretch to ask for a skip. She just doesn't appear as out there as DD7 on paper, yet.

Glad to hear DD5 has a chance to grow into her "extremeness"!
