I got the region name wrong last year, but will try it again this year.
It looks like we're moving again, but this time not nearly as far-
I'm looking at a job in Gainesville. Any knowledge of elementary programs up there?

Kerry, I spent a fair amount of time digging into this over the last few years, so will give you a head start. We are located in an adjacent school distric, so haven't been able to take advantage of any of these (though I have tried!). The Alachua County Public School website is a good place to start researching. There are a couple of options, but I'm not sure what availability might be for your DD (entering 3rd grade, right?).

Two public magnets in Gainesville, one for gifted starting in 2nd grade (Williams) and one for STEM (Foster) starting in 3rd grade. Both are filled and waitlisted for next year as far as I know. Another magnet in Archer which is about 15-20 miles SW of Gainesville, reasonable communte, don't know availability.

Several charter schools, that supposedly have individualized instruction, but I don't have any first hand knowledge. Names I know are Healthy Learning Academy, One Room Schoolhouse.

PK Yonge is the lab school associated with UF. K-12 program, academic and excellent performing arts (theater, music, etc.) program. I know several families with older kids (high school) and they have very flexible schedules and coordinate closely with UF and the local CC (Santa Fe) to allow the students to take college classes as early as 9th or 10th grade. From the bits and pieces I've heard, the mixed age range offers good opportunities for cross-grade groupings, but most of the details I know are associated with extracurriculars - (7th-8th graders have access to varsity sports and the performing arts are open to all). Don't have much specifics on lower grades and they are also typically full and waitlisted.

Private schools include Oak Hall (K-12 I think) and St. Patrick (elem.). Oak Hall students are commonly in the various local accolades reports - math team competitions, I think recently a perfect SAT score, that kind of thing. I don't know anything personally as it was never a reasonable option for us, so haven't dug in too much. I do know someone whose spouse teaches there and has elementary age students there, so could probably track down at least one first person account if you want more information.

Have heard good reports on several local public elementaries - Finley, Littlewood, Glen Springs, Talbot, Hidden Oak generally get good reviews from most parents, but I know that is not always relevant to us, but don't have anything more than that. Middle school magnets are highly regarded from what I have heard, but again don't have much specific.

One advantage is the proximity of the university - mentors, libraries, museums, etc. Also, having many highly educated parents (professors, etc.) in the immediate vicinity seems to assist in the atmosphere/attitude of nurturing the high achievers and the students who are not exactly the norm as opposed to just meeting the lowest common denominator.

Not to say there aren't any downsides associated with the university, but there are opportunities if you look for them.

Hope this gives you a starting point!

    Thanks Prissy,

I'll check those ideas out. I already heard of the magnet programs and was told they are all full and waitlisted, but I'll try the charters and PK Yonge. The private ones are out for us at this point (unless a long lost relative passes away wink )

    Kerry
