I'm sorry for not being able to help on the perfectionism (I'm still an extreme perfectionist; I've been that way ever since I was born), but I can tell you that I have refused instruction by either skipping ahead in my textbooks ("Violet, don't skip ahead. It's not smart to be ahead of everyone else because you're not following directions!") or by just getting angry and not doing the work. Yes, it is common, especially if it is too easy, too repetitive, too pointless, too cruel ("Anyone who cries is a baby, so don't cry!").

I hope this helps!
