I hear of many different IQ tests out there, and in the case if the school does not want to test the girls, where do I look for testing?

Look on hoagies for testers with gifted experience that are reccomended. I hope you have luck with the school providing testing.

The testers who work with gifted children are definitely your best bet. However, I had to find free testing for our daughters who are homeschooled.

I called our local universities until I tracked down a program that does IQ testing for free, working with doctoral students. In addition, one of our daughters had some neurological issues, so it turned out that her WISC testing would be covered through our insurance.

This may be a risky strategy and it definitely is not advisable for folks who can afford private testing with people who are experienced with testing gifted children.

I used a highly known psychologist known for IQ testing but it was $1000. I was a little surprised but she was a known quantity, she knows what to look for, decided to use WISC because she could "go higher", could add some math. I paraphrase since I am not knowledgeable. But I thought I would get reliable info. BTW, it was $1000 whether it was SBV or WISC.

What rates are people seeing this year from established psychologists that do the testing?

I talked to a school that works with very young gifted kids, because that is the sort of child I was considering getting a tester for. I went with their usual tester and she worked very well with my dd4. WPPSI, approx. $400.

The rates that were quoted for us were $700 for each our children using our local well known and well recommended tester. I believe she is totally worth the money, but I didn't have 1400 dollars.

I was quoted 800 per child to have the testing done at Dr. Silverman's clinic in Colorado, plus the preconsultation at 125 an hour, and by the time I would add in travel cost we would be talking real money.

That said, I think the cost of testers who work with gifted children would be totally worth the money, especially after the first experience.

    Adrienne,

    See if this helps:
    http://giftedkids.about.com/od/testing/ht/find_tester.htm

I am in the same boat with my DD10. I know she is smart, bright, excels in state achievement tests and all - but, I have no clue of her "level of giftedness". My state doesnot offer any GT programs either.

I honestly think knowing her level would be beneficial in understanding how best to support and challenge her as a learner. But, with a price quote of 2000$ (for IQ + achievement test), I am seriously having second thoughts.

I may be able to stretch a bit and make it happen - but, $2000 still seems such a huge tag!

Not sure, if it makes sense to opt for cheaper tester who may not be well versed with GT kids OR bite the bullent and go for the expensive ones.

    Decisions, decisons - 'sigh'

When they tested my eldest nearly 5 yrs ago, they quoted us $1000. We had an intern of theirs do the testing for half price ($500). She was working on her PhD and had a Masters.

The last I had spoken with them a year or so ago, they told me they were running $1600 for IQ and achievement testing. We did a consult re our youngest there about a year ago and had some concerns regarding the way that was handled, so we went with a different tester who didn't have as much experience with gifted kids, but who did have a lot of experience with LD since we were trying to rule in or out 2e.

Thanks for the info about Dr. Silverman's clinic. I am trying to recall what specific testing I requested. Our dd took WISC and WJ III, so the only thing left would be the SB LM, or WIAT?

When they tested dd11, they did the WISC-IV and WJ-III along with a self esteem inventory of some sort. So, perhaps if you were looking at just the LM or a different achievement test, that's why my #s and yours don't line up.
