    Hi,
My son 4 years 11 months got tested yesteday. Here are scores. Can you please tell what are his strengths and weaknesses.

    WPPSI-III

    Verbal IQ 129
    Performance IQ 146
    Processing IQ 119
    FSIQ 139

    Matrix Reasoning (MR) 18
    Block Design (BD) 17
    Picture Concepts (PC) 17

    Verbal Subtests
    Information (IN) 14
    Vocabulary (VO) 15
    Word Reasoning (WR) 15

    Processing Speed Subtests
    Coding (CD) 13
    Symbol Search (SS) 14

Woodcock-Johnson III Normative Update Tests of Achievement (Form A)
    Norms based on age 4-11

    CLUSTER/Test
    BROAD MATH - 139 99.6
    BRIEF READING - 131 98
    BASIC READING - 142 99.7
    BRIEF MATH - 139 99.5
    MATH CALC SKI - 129 97
    ________________________________________
    Letter-Word 24(raw) 132 98%
    Calculation 9 133 99%
    Math Fluency 10 108 71%
    Passage Comprehension 7 111 76%
    Applied Problems 22 130 98%
    Word Attack 7 142 99.7%

I did not understand they mention soemthing AE for cluster tests, what does it mean. Some tests 6-11, 6-4, 7-1 etc?. what does it mean?.

And also Math fluency shows only 71% is it less?. Passage comprehension too.

His repots says for educational recommendations, His reading level is late kindergarden to early first grade. His math level is late first grade to early second grade. But his math scores shows less.

    Please explain.

    Thanks.

I'm not terribly familiar with the WPPSI, so I won't be a lot of help, just a little. AE stands for "age equivalent" meaning that he is performing at the equivalent of an average child who is age 6 yrs 11 months, for example.

Based on those scores, the overall pattern to me would appear that he is quite strong in all areas and likely strongest in areas related to mathematical and spatial reasoning. Some lower scores (like the math fluency) really shouldn't be concerning. Uneven development is not uncommon in gifted children.

My oldest, who was tested on the WISC-IV and WJ-III at 7.5, had some scores on the WJ that were avg for age and some that were at 18+ AE. Her lower areas were often in subjects where she hadn't been exposed to any advanced material at that point and for which she just didn't have a natural proclivity to picking it up with no exposure. Even in math, which isn't her strongest area, she is testing very highly now b/c she has been accelerated in all areas including math.

Perhaps your son has very good abstract reasoning and number sense, but isn't quite as strong in whatever area is tested in math fluency. I don't know exactly what that subtest is testing.

Thank you very much for very good explaination.

For the first question, He will be 5 on May 11th, got tested on April 16th. I do not know if the results are rounded to 5. I can find out.

The reason I got him tested is, his pre k teacher advised us to get him into gifted program as he already knows most of the kindergarden stuff. I don't know his math skills, as he never likes to do math at home with me, he prefers reading with me. So I thought he is good in reading only. But test reults shows his math side which is impressive.

It seems he did above average on all timed tests, I can understand. Hope this improves with time.

I'm not aware of this that they check for speed accuracy at this age.

    Thanks again.

Our report says that math fluency measures the ability to solve simple addition, subtraction, and multiplication facts quickly. My son scored lower there than anywhere else in the math areas as well. My guess is it just means he doesn't have all his facts memorized yet so it takes a little longer to answer some of the questions.

I read couple of places that Some IQ scales does not add processing speed IQ. Is it true?. If yes, FSIQ will be different?.

Yes, for the WISC (older kids version of the WPPSI), there is a thing called "GAI" or general abilities index and it only includes verbal and performance.

For the WPPSI a similar score can be calculated. In one of my kids' reports it is simply descriptively called "Full scale IQ without coding". For my other one (different tester) it does call it GAI and it cites references to how the NAGC advices its use for gifted program selection criteria.

Since his coding index is his lowest, this other combined score would be higher than the FSIQ, while it is not technically the FSIQ, it can be a better representation of IQ for some children.

You can find online how to calculate the GAI for the WISC, but not for the WPPSI. I just calculated my dd's score using those tables, and the results I find online are one to 4 points higher than what she has (we have that calculation done using 2 different subtests for one of the indices, so I can play with both).

My guess from your ds' scores and extrapolating from my dd's is that he'd have something in the low 140s, and percentiles 99.6 to 99.8%.

Your tester should be able to calcuate that for your ds.

Can anyone calculate GAI using my DS's score?. I will try online too.

I tried online.. I got GAI as 144. Can someone double check it?.
    Thanks.
