Does anyone have information on gifted & public schools in Durham NC? I sent an e-mail to Durham PAGE and plan to contact the district but I'd appreciate any help from this board. The magnet deadline application is the end of April but I can't tell if it's just a lottery or a true accelerated cluster: W. G. Pearson Gifted and Talented Magnet 3501 Fayetteville Street, 27707, 560-3988. Grades K-5 The Gifted and Talented (GT) program's instructional philosophy is based on the belief that every child has gifts and talents that need to be valued and nurtured. The Gifted and Talented program serves students of all academic levels, including those who have been identified as academically gifted. Features include:
Variety of electives and course levels for exploration of interests, acceleration, and rich, in-depth study of the subject Foreign language instruction Piano lab, theater, computer lab

I have to say that this jumps off the page to me as sounding like a lottery-type situation. I'd strongly recomend a visit if possible, to see the whole thing in action - terriffic, enthusiastic teachers can make many types of situations work, and this might be better than what you have now, even if it is a lottery. You know all the questions to ask, and if they let you look at their MAP results and show you how they actually use those results - then you will know exactly what you are dealing with! Anyone more local? Grinity

Thanks Grinity. Unfortunately, we probably won't get a chance to visit schools before the lottery deadlines. I've gotten some good infomation via PMs and the Durham PAGE president so I'm feeling a little less lost. Don't you know I'd love to be able to see school MAP scores...especially growth!

Good Luck! Maybe if you call the MAP folks you can get the growth scores....worth a phonecall...I'll bet they need to hire you as a consultant anyway.

I don't know if anyone there might be able to give you recommendations or not, but what about contacting the Duke Talent program? http://www.tip.duke.edu/index.html
She thought she could, so she did.

Good idea mnmom! I'll bet they need to hire you as a consultant anyway. I wouldn't last long with their policy to filter information through the districts instead of giving parents the information directly.

Slide 85 from this presentation may have the answer. http://www.nwea.org/sites/www.nwea.org/files/Creating_Optimal_B_Thorne_SC09.pdfCAUTIONS NWEA information makes district, school, teacher, and student performance very transparent - Quick and ill informed judgments could be very damaging Critical personnel decisions should not be made until a minimum of three years growth and/or performance have been carefully analyzed Extensive professional development must be provided teachers and administrators and especially in areas needing improvement The 15th slide is also really interesting showing the 6 year range in national growth and achievement reading scores. That's just for high to low quartiles.

inky...
I live in the area and there is a small school called Camelot Academy in Durham. I even went to visit and loved it. It is in a historic, charming (huge) house and class sizes are small but not tiny. They move your child up to the appropriate grade level for each subject as they need it (mastery based teaching I think). I'd look into it if you can afford the tuition...
