What's the typical age that kids begin drawing with perspective? For example, when do they normally stop drawing pictures with a stripe of blue at the top for the sky and a stripe of green at the bottom for grass?

I'm asking because today, DS4.4 drew a picture of a house and began coloring green for grass around it. Then he said, "I'm coloring green on top of the house. That makes it look like the grass is behind the house."

Frankly, I'm hopeless at art, and if I were drawing the house, I'd probably stick with the strip of green at the bottom and blue at the top and call it good. So I'm probably easily impressed. :-) But since I'm already thinking about putting together a portfolio for DYS, would this be something worth documenting and including?

My 3rd grader, is being taught some perspective this year but not with the lines going to the horizon. The are talking about foreground middle ground, and back ground and size in relation to this. Here a example of doing this: Get 2 o 3 books on oceanography/sealife for the DC to explore. They make a pencil drawing on watercolor paper with much of what is found in the books. The drawing has sea life near and far and above water with land in the background. try to enclude lots of details. paint the final picture. This project has lots of depth. The ideas can be applied to many projects.

I think DYS is looking for more traditional academics 2 or 3 years above age not art or music. Chess is considered significant if that applies to you. If you think a drawing is special go ahead and include it as something extra. Best of luck.
