So I'm a little late to the party... DS13 has just been notified and couldn't be happier!

We have been homeschooling using mostly the classical method since 1st gr. and will continue to do so until at least next year (8th). High school anyone??? Really looking forward to having a mentor and educational guidance for the teen years.

DS was finally tested last Oct. for both IQ (WISC-IV) and achievement (SAT), and very much to our suprise was eligilble for both DYS and SET. He enjoyed the testing process, but can't say DH and I liked filling out that DYS application! crazy

I've lurked on the boards a few times, but now am feeling more a part of it all. While we all knew DS was bright, his lack of motivation sometimes clouded him as appearing very average. He also struggles a bit with writing, but loves to read.

Thanks to all for these interesting and informative posts. I feel like I have sooo much catching up to do!

Thank you everyone for the warm welcome.

I'd be happy to share experiences with homeschooling (thru our local K-12 charter). I am just now running into problems with DS's age not matching his grade level, hence our interest in DYS.

We aren't sure whether to accelerate or not (he's a pretty immature 13 y/o in 7th gr.) since it was a non issue in prior grade levels. Most of his desired elective classes are geared for 9th gr.+ and his charter is being very strict with this policy. frown

Kriston- haha, I was hoping to learn from you guys! smile

    Thanks again, all!

LOL! Happily it usually works both ways.

My sons are only 8 and 5, and we're homeschooling one (maybe the other next year, too--not sure yet). So you're ahead of us on a similar path. smile

    Very cool, congratulations!!

The process of having everything set up will take some time (a few weeks). As soon as you can access the YSPW site, I would advice you to go to the elists and subsribe to those you are interested in (for instance the teen one and homeschooling). The homeschooling list is very active and I am sure you'll get lots of ideas and suggestions from there.

I'm amazed that he's been able to stay in lockstep with his chronological grade for this long in light of his obviously very advanced abilities!

Yes, that would be odd! Sorry, I should have been specific.

DS has always been ahead in most subjects and it was never a problem since his core subjects were done @ home. Since he's enrolled with a CA public charter, he is (at least on record) in 7th gr. He was never made to stick with the state grade-level standards, so it seemed to work out great for us.

However, his K-12 charter has really grown these past few years and they've added classes for their 9-12 that DS would love. Things like robotics, engineering, and various computer courses. Doesn't matter that he's already taken and received A's in pre-calc, programming and the likes through EPGY, or that he's probably more qualified than any other 9th grader currently enrolled. There are classes that both 7/8 and 9-12 can be mixed (like theater, music, and art), but no way would they consider my son for the electives he's more geared towards. Very frustrating to say the least.

I also don't know what will happen once he's in high school. Will all these math, science, and language classes he's taken count toward hs credits since they're hs level? He has an assigned credentialed teacher who means well, but she's never had deal with this situation before, so she's really not too sympathetic. Now, if he were a struggling student, I'm sure that would be a completely different story!

Mam- I'm looking forward to all the helpful advice the DYS community has to offer. It sounds like a true blessing!

At least go through the motions of trying to ask for the electives to be the ones he wants, and starting at the bottom, work you way up the chain of command to see what happens. You can't know unless you try.

Also - I would think that they could assign him a different credentialing teacher, who would be able to provide those answers to those very reasonable questions.

    Best Wishes, and welcome!
