I am considering having my 14 and 16 year olds apply for DYS. They have had qualifying Explore and ACT scores for years but I never could find anything to put in a portfolio and I couldn't afford private IQ testing. I've finally found someone who can do a test for a reasonable rate. Do you think it's worth doing this so late? The 16 year old had a WPSI done at 4 as part of a study on same age non-genetically related siblings and scored 139 but hit the ceiling on 5 different subtests. I always wondered where she really stood but I couldn't afford testing. Her biological brother was even more precocious than she was so I am especially eager to see where he stands. They both skipped one grade but meeting their needs has been challenging.

Totally worth it. Do they have any interest in Think Summer Institute?

    Yes.

Not that you or they are unsure of who you are. But it will always help to know the strenghts and weaknesses. The acknowledgement of who they are, their potentional, an understanding of themselves .... yes. smile

My 14 yo is considering applying to Think. His sister enjoyed a course at CTD the summer before starting h.s. and it had a profound effect on her to be with students from around the country (and world) who were just as curious and motivated as she was. She took a psychology course and then scored a 5 on AP psychology as a freshman. She is currently a Rotary exchange student taking a "gap year" before her junior year at a public boarding school for gifted youth. My son is debating between Think, CTD and Concordia language villages. We'll see if he gets into Think and then we will have to decide which is best for him. His sister is hoping to work in Congress as a page this summer. If not, we'll try to find her a volunteer position where she can maintain her Spanish fluency. If I could afford it, I would send them both to Think but, with 6 kids at home, I can not rationalize the expense. On paper our income looks pretty good so we would be unlikely to qualify for financial aid.

I really enjoy reading about the older kids, there are so many opportunities for them (if they know where to find them).

I had never heard of such a school. I don't think I had even heard of public boarding schools.

A number of states have them. They are part of the National Consortium for Specialized Secondary Schools of Mathematics, Science and Technology. See National Consortium for Specialized Secondary Schools The one in our state is about 20 years old and admits 150 juniors each year for a two year program. The entrance requirements aren't extraordinary (minimum SAT of 1500/2400 plus other factors) but it will still give my daughter the chance to live and study with more motivated students than at her local public high school.

Thanks, some of them look really cool (I saw a few). I only found a residential one in the ones I randomly selected.

I hope your dd has a good experience there.

Hi everyone - this thread is a little old, but I just wanted to share the experiences of one student who attended the THINK Summer Institute. Here is a snippet of an email he recently sent the Davidson Institute:

    Quote
"I am now a freshman on the pre-med track at Dartmouth College. To start off, I have no doubt that I would not be attending an Ivy League institution without the personal growth I had at THINK. THINK also helped me prepare for the workload; I developed a lot of time management skills at THINK that are really helping me succeed in college. I currently have a 3.5 GPA without ever having pulled an all-nighter. I don't think I've ever even done homework past 12 at night, something that many of my peers - all of whom are smart enough to attend one of the top colleges in the country - consider impossible."

Thanks, Mark. I hope that THINK will be as motivating for my ds this summer. He's never done academics with people like himself, and because he is growing to appreciate and enjoy group learning, I think it will be a great experience.

    Will you be there?
