We haven't had much trouble finding stuff he wants to read that is in the 4th grade range but content appropriate. I wouldn't have let him read the Wimpy Kid books but he brought them home from the school library and it was the first time his library choice wasn't censored. I didn't want to discourage him.

I think it gets much harder around a 6th grade level book to control content. We'll just keep going along doing what we're doing and ignore her bizarre comments :-)

I don't know anything about the Wimpy Kid books, but ds6 (also in first grade) has asked for them for Christmas. Did you have any regrets about your son reading them? I had planned to buy them (we have a lot of kids so we end up buying a lot of books).

No regrets really, just some things he ended up thinking about that he otherwise probably wouldn't have. There's a lot of discussion of bullying both physical and emotional. There are some hints of inappropriate topics related to Greg's older brother but they went right over his head. I think on one point they say his brother is reading a magazine with ladies in it. You and I know that's not Good Housekeeping! But DS had no clue that's not what they meant :-)
