Read today's Gifted Exchange Blog post and this part really struck a nerve wink

Many unsocial left-brainers are much more comfortable with text-based than with in-person communication. With text, all the social cues are right there, written out in front of you, and theres more time to figure what to say and how to say it.

Me! Me! You won't get a call from me if I have your email!

I am definitely left-brained but I get tired of email-only communication for some things like making plans with someone. There is so much back and forth when a phone conversation would be so much faster and more personal. A lot can be learned from tone of voice.

Article describes my son to a T, except he communicates very little via any medium, usually one word or "grunts"!!

A lot of the description rang a bell for me, much like my ds9, however I would not consider him primarily a 'linear' thinker or learner. My ds' main problem in group work has typically been working with kids who aren't polite, not feeling personally accepted by group, not having ideas accepted by the group, lack of fairness and other issues which I think a lot of gifted kids run into when dealing with more than one person at a time.

I also wonder about how well a less-than-socially-adept person would be able to compose a good email. Doesn't writing with the understanding of how things will be interpreted utilize many of the same skills used in face to face communication? I don't know, I have probably read way too many awkward work emails where people come off as rude, etc., when simply trying to convey information.

    This is really thought provoking:
"Theres one element of Writing Across the Curriculum from which left-brainers should be exempt, however, and that is the requirement that they explain their answers to math problems verbally. Many left-brainers do arithmetic automatically in their heads in ways that cant be explained in words."
Again, doesn't sound linear to me, but does sound like my kid.

    Very interesting, thanks for posting!

This is funny. I will definitely use email before a phone call but I would rather be face to face than use the phone. Anyone else?

Great article, thanks for sharing it. My son definitely prefers to socialize via games etc. although this extends into real life friends but then they play the game. This really helps him have structured positive time with his friends but many parents here are very anti-video games and feel they are really only for when you have no one else to play with. I do encourage my son and his friends to get outside etc. after they have been playing for a bit but if I took away the games entirely during a play date they would all end in disaster.
