    Hello,

I am new to all of this G and T stuff so please bear with me. My daughter turned 7 in August and is the second grade. Last year she was tested for the gifted program in our district and qualified in Reading, Math and Cognitive Ability. The district changed how they serve G and T and it will not start for her until 3rd grade. I know that she is not getting what she needs in her currently classroom and I guess I am looking for some perspective into her test results to help us determine the next step for her. Her score on MAT reading was 99, MAT math was 87, Comprehensive Test of Basic Skills Math was 99 and on the cogAT her score was 149.

I guess I am looking for input as to where on the "gifted spectrum" so to speak these scores would place her so we can figure out how to proceed.

Thanks for putting up with the long post. This is all new to us and trying to figure out what is best for our daughter.

    Thanks,
    Betula

Thanks for the quick reply. She does have at least one other student that I know of who qualified for G and T in her class but I have no idea what her scores were. They are in a class w/ a brand new teacher who will be there until November when the other one comes back from maternity leave. I don't think she really got challenged last year and I am not feeling confident with this year so far and we are trying to figure out what our next step should be. I know that a parent can request to have additional testing done so that student can take classes a grade up for areas in which they qualifiy. I assume then maybe an IQ test would be done. Amazes me how the school would never offer this on their own but a parent has to request it.
What does reaching the ceiling mean on the tests? Forgive my ignorance but this is really new to me.

    Thanks again,

    Betsy

Betula - wanted to say welcome! Dottie is the expert on testing so I'll defer to her but wanted to send you a welcome!

I'd definitely pursue further testing especially if the school does it and it may qualify her for subject acceleration. I'm drooling over a school that even have that as option even if the parent has to request it. I'd ask beforehand what test will be given.
