    Hi again.
So we just came home from the optometrist who informed us that DS7 has pretty evident astigmatism in both eyes. He says that with correction all the little things that we have noticed (consistently reversing certain letters, pushing away school books, fatiguing with writing, writing certain letters and numbers backwards even though he can describe correctly which direction they face, etc) should all go away really quickly. Of course this all presented as ADHD-type symptoms: restlessness, fidgety, balking at doing school work even though motivated to learn, etc. This doctor was so awesome he showed us all the pictures of DS7 eyes and showed us what diseased eyes would look like. He went over everything taking time to explain things thoroughly to my son and me. He explained exactly what impact the astigmatism was having on a 7 year old. It was awesome to meet a professional who knew what a "little" glitch like this would mean to a kid like DS7. Anyways long story short here, has anyone encountered this and did you really notice these big differences he is telling us we will see?

No, we never noticed anything like that when GS10 got his glasses this spring. Oh, I guess he can read smaller print without strain now. And now he can catch a ball since he can see it coming.

Wow - that's great news hkc! I have astigmatism, and the only change I remember is that I noticed that I could see individual leaves in all the trees. Amazing! A whole new world. So, it wouldn't surprise me about the letter reversals.

OhGrandma, That is great news since we also struggled with that this summer in baseball. He could easily scoop up ground balls but refused to "play catch" unless it was a tennis ball.

SPG- I might forego getting my eyes rechecked then. If you can now see the leaves on the trees, what would that do to all the dust bunnies in my house???? ROFL

I have to add that this happened when I was 9yo; now I'm not sure if I can see the forest for the trees...

GS10's eyes changed rapidly for the worse between 9y2m and 9y5m. I felt like a really bad grandma when the eye dr said he'd never seen a kid with such poor vision on the first vist. eek But after talking to him(dr) a few minutes I learned that GS10's growth spurt during that time was most likely the culprit, and then I didn't feel too bad. But this summer, after an impromptu game of catch with some boys he just met, he came to me just glowing with how his glasses helped him catch the ball every time! eek gee..make me feel bad again, kid..! His glasses are the last thing off at night, first thing on in the morning; he doesn't need reminded at all. And after he broke the first pair, he's very careful with this pair.

I just wanted to come back and say that the glasses have done wonders for fluency and reversals. DS7 said the leaves on the trees were so beautiful he wanted to draw a picture of them. He has been making lots of comments about stuff like that but I noticed a big difference in his reading/writing. And just like your GS OhGma, DS7 never needs to be reminded to put them on. laugh
