That was a quick couple of hours... the tester said that DS had a lot of fun throughout and was very enthusiastic. (Whew!)

I'm not sure what my expectations were -- it's all a blur now -- but I think he's far exceeded them.

VCI: 155
PRI: 135
WMI: 138
PSI: 144
FSI: 153

She didn't provide the raw scores over the phone, but said I'd get the full report when we met next week.

And I didn't ask about the GAI.

They will be giving the WIAT either tomorrow or Monday.

Wow. I'm speechless... and that in and of itself is rare.

And... I get to ask my first Dottie question:

How does the FSI work?

I thought it would be some composite of the other four scores, not necessarily an average, but not exceeding any of them, either.

(9/25: Turns out the tester made a scoring error, so I corrected the PRI Composite & FSIQ to actual. Sill a terrific set, but I wanted to set the record strait.)

The tester said she double-checked the numbers and was confident. But, she said, "You never know what the computer will do with them when I plug everything in tonight."

Funny.

The strangest sensation is knowing that I can't share this with him -- at least not for a number of years.

Is there any other totally amazing secret about a child are we supposed to withhold from him?

My advice is apply to DYS....hope to see you on the other side.

Also, my DD9 still can't tie her shoes very well, couldn't tie them at all until last year. There are worse things..........

Gee, Dottie - another question already... imagine that.

The tester today said that a different person would likely administer the WIAT, as the other would be more experienced with brighter kids.

Is there any reason the same person should administer both tests?

The tester said she had various sub-tests because of hitting a couple of ceilings. I'm not really inclined (can't really say why) and I don't know that having the higher results would open any different doors at DYS or any other talent search.

I figure that once he's through the doors of any such organization, his scores are meaningless -- it's what he does with his ability (that I can't tell him about) that really counts.

Dandy, he's already discovering his abilities. Maybe he won't know the number, but he's going to notice that he is different. I think it's a good idea to think about how you will talk about that with him because it's going to come up. It already has with my DS6.

Wow Dandy, those are some impressive numbers! I'm with Cathy A - your child will know he's different, and there are some ways of telling him why without going into details. E.g., "Everyone's brain works a little differently. You will be able to learn some things really quickly without much, if any, repetition. Most people will need to have several repetitions over several school years to really learn something, and it is helpful to remember that everyone learns differently and try not to be upset when people don't get something right away that you might think is easy." (This is kind of what we told our DS when he was getting frustrated trying to teach his grandma how to play a computer game.)

Your tester might have some good explanations for what to tell young children about test results.
