Hi My son got rejected from Level IV GT services Friday...however his scores NNAT got him in the GT pool and his GBRS were 13 which the gifted specialist said were very high. She said 13 was one of the higher BGRS given. IS 13 high or low? My friend said a lot of applicants go in with 16s and that was probably why he was rejected. But the gifted specialist said his GBRS and accompanying comments were very high.

The specialist was befuddled and contacted Caroline Horn of the GT headqtrs...

I just want some context on the GBRS score...the principal and specialist recommended that I file an appeal.

I'm sorry that your son didn't get in. You should definitely appeal, especially since your school is encouraging you to appeal. Unfortunately, that requires some "new" piece of information, so you'll probably need to contact George Mason University and pay for a WISC test (or do it through a private tester that meets Fairfax County's criteria).

My impression is that a 13 is a fine GBRS score, and that shouldn't have kept him out. Were his Cogat scores really inconsistent with his NNAT score? If so, that may have concerned the eligibility committee, and a good WISC score might result in his being declared eligible. Good luck.

He received 98% on the NNAT and he scored in thet 90s for the COGAT.

I'm going to file an appeal. He already took the WISC and actually did better on the NNAT. So I didn't include the WISC in his application.

    I did't provide 5 recommenations and 5 samples though. I provided 3 recommendations and 3 samples.

Since the first submission, he participated on a winning ODyssey of the Mind team, won the science fair. Completed his 2nd year of FLES Chinese. I don't know if these will help. I"m going to talk to the GT Specialist at our school on Tuesday.

I would file an appeal, include the WISC and the other activities, especially Odyssey and the Science Fair.

I only had one recommendation from a non-FCPS teacher. The FCPS recommendations are considered part of the GBRS from what I understand. I did include 5 work samples and also 3 "certificates" that she had from various activities.

My DD had a 99.9% on the NNAT, but only 94% on CogAT. The criteria are so arbitrary. Strange.

How did you see his GBRS? Did you see it before or after the letter?

    Good luck!

Meg...your son had great scores. The GBRS refer to the Gifted Behavioral rating. The specialist wrote me an email friday afternoon telling me she was baffled by my son's rejection. His GBRS were 13 one of the highest at his school...An average child has a GBR of 4.

The WISC is done by a pscyhologist. I did it at George Mason and a masters student did my sons. He did better on the NNAT and COGAT so we went with those scores. The WISC was administered verbally.
