We recently took our DS who is 3 1/2 to a dev. psychologist because we were having behavioral issues and his pediatrician said it was because he was gifted and not being challenged at school and we should move him up. We thought maybe he was gifted, but not sure and his school was refusing to move him up to the next age group because he is a mid-sept. birthday. So we took him to the psych for an independent eval. and some for some help in understanding what we could do to help him. I didn't think she would do an IQ test- but she did. His scores on the WPPSI-III was verbal 139, performance 117 and Full scale 132. She said that is real IQ was probably 139 because of verbal and she showed us the bell curve with him being at the end of the very superior section and said that its a blessing and a curse and we need to focus on the social skills right now, as well as find him a new school with older kids and some more academics... we've done all of this and its working- his behavior is much improved. But of course I now have questions about the IQ score- is it unstable because of his age? Could it go down? Could it go up? Would the score be different on another test? The SB test? Is 139 gifted, Highly gifted or exceptionally gifted?

Its great to have some answers, but of course its created even more questions!

    Thanks for your help!

Dottie is the resident test guru here, she'll be able to interpet your DS scores. You have definitely come to the right place. Oh and by the way get used to the questions, it's SOP around here!

Thank you for the responses. I don't know that I'd say he was mature- he is still a 3 year old boy if you know what I mean! I suppose for now we'll keep challenging him mentally as he seems interested and go from there.

Once more quick question... on the wpssi test he was in the very superior category-I don't see that verbage used for other test results... what is its equivilent on other IQ tests?

    Thank you again!

She has known my son since birth and he is a very active, curious and talkative guy who likes to debate/question authority and during his 3 year well check she kept commenting on how advanced he was verbally as well as insightful, etc. He also enjoys doing 60-100 piece puzzles, etc. She has been telling us for sometime that he is advanced and that being in a two year old class for preschool was a problem for him that he needed an academic school.
We knew was way ahead of his 'peers' developmentally but thought alot of it was because of his birthday being in sept.

When the Psych did the tests she also gave us an age comparative for him, he turns 3 1/2 next month- his total concept age equivalent was 4 year, 4 months and his school readiness was 4 years, 7 months. She recommended a school for us and they basically made a spot for him in the 3&4 year old class- its only been the first week- but its like we've got our son back, he's happy because he is with kids like himself- his true peers, he's also getting academic work (and he isn't bossing the 'babies' around). I've also heard that this school has lots of gifted kids- so it seems to be a great fit.

    Thank you again!

I definitely agree that all of his behavioral issues are not GT related. I think for our DS its personality too, additionally my DD has some medical issues that come into play at home as well.

I'm very curious to see how this develops over the next few years.
