At Grinity's prompting, I am posting yet again...
We have made DS11in13days an appointment with Dr. Amend at the beginning of February...
Ohhh the waiting! I just sent both the teacher and the school counselor and the principle notice that we are going, as well as requests for test results and forms to be filled out.. yadda yadda...
Calling the PhD here to forward test results to Kentucky...
Making hotel reservations and babysitting accomodations....
Watching DS for signs that either I am or am not crazy..( He put together a 600 pc LEGO Star Wars Ship.. not crazy.. forgot his lunch on the dining room table.. crazy! )
Now what do I do?....twiddles thumbs...
Any suggestions? ( Everyone here has the flu, too, so at least that will keep my mind occupied...)

It seems like waiting is part and parcel of getting what our kids need. SOmehow you have to find ways to occupy your mind...this board is good, re-reading current reports, getting yout questions together...revising...
We are in the midst of IEP/Testing/Vision Therapy etc for dd7. It has been a LONG road and it "ain't over yet" but we feel like we are finally on the "right road".
I would say to recheck all of your records and recheck your list of questions and concerns, then get yourself a mindless entertaining book to read that has nothing to do with anything educational and have a good laugh to get the endorphins pumping!

In my experience, forgetting lunches (and jackets and homework and shoes) is very much a part of being gifted for many HG kids. I see it as a good sign--he just has more interesting things to worry about!

Would love to hear how your appointment went with him. We were very impressed with him when I made a phone appointment with him concerning testing...the only thing - we are in Florida and is in Kentucky...we figured the whole shpeel would cost us close to $3,000 with travel expenses and he said he would like at least 3-5 days for testing. So would love to hear someone's first hand experience with him as we are thinking of trying to save up!

I was very impressed with him on the phone also. We have two days scheduled for testing. Mostly because we have had some things done before that he can "skip". Driving from almost Michigan, staying 2 nights.
You can be sure that I will be posting extensively after testing!

I've met Dr. Amend, spoken to him, and heard him speak. He has a very gentle manner and I think he really knows his stuff. If it wasn't so far from my house to KY, I'd be hoping to get my youngest evaluated by him.

Where's Kriston, she'd say something like, "You may be crazy, but not because you are having Amend test your son"! It's actually a very sane and responsible course of action. Sometimes we don't understand why our mommy gut is telling us to run out into a busy street........ That is, until we look to the right and realize a run away freight train is on the sidewalk heading right towards us! That's just a fancy way of telling you that sometimes extreme measures are called for...... Take a deep breath and play the waiting game. While you're at it, pat yourself on the back and give yourself credit for being such a smart, strong mom!

OHH.. well said neato ( and kriston! )
That's exactly how I felt today e-mailing everyone. They have been aware of what is going on and what we were looking for, but not to this extent ( and I'm pretty sure the Principal is unaware of everything). So I felt like I was opening up a can of worms and was sitting here waiting for the backlash.
I know that we are doing the right thing, DH is more adament than I am, so know that something must be done, as he doesn't insist on much of anything and I am usually the one to freak out. Can't help but be afraid that everything is going to come back "normal" ( not that there is anything wrong with that)and I'll hear a bunch of "I told you so's"
Thanks everyone for the support, Think of us in February!

I just had one of those "Am I or am I not crazy?" moments this week.
DS7 has been doing fine at his homeschool work, but when you're in the thick of it, and you see him doing things that aren't easy for him--even struggling with something from time to time...Well, I have to admit that I start thinking that he's not that advanced and maybe I am something of a nut to think that he's better off at home than he would be at our particular school.
Okay, so to make sure we've dotted our Ts and crossed our Is before testing this spring, I have been giving him some at-grade-level work just on the fly. Well, um, he covered all of alphabetizing in about 3 minutes, no exaggeration. That was a 2nd-4th grade workbook, and he was rolling his eyes at how easy it was. He didn't have to think even for a second about any of it! He got the hardest ones right while playing with his Pokemon cards at the same time! And he's not even a particularly good listener, so this stuff was even easier for him than it sounds! :p
At times like that, I realize that no, I'm not a nut. At least not about this. (Ha!) He really is THAT far ahead, and he really would be miserable in our school system if we didn't do something significant for him.
So yes, I think you do keep having those moments. I completely agree!
Kriston
