Thank you OHGrandma. I totally agree. I think it is odd. Either the materials are for public school teachers only or they are for everyone. How are they to know that your child is in fact in the public education sector? There is no registration for your child's name on the site. Since mine is of the Pre-K category I selected homeschooling since she is not in any school at this time. I hope I receive my items and don't get a run around.

I eventually talked her into to placing my order, but I don't think she is setting me up to be able to place future orders online, FYI.
I wonder what kind of FEDERAL regulations allow a company to sell educational materials to parents who homeschool, but not to parents who send their child to public school? Isn't this denying a parents right to educate their child in the best manner possible? I wonder how we can find out about this?

It is kind of weird. I'm with 'Neato, though, that I'll bet it was one person. I selected "homeschooler" from the list and had no trouble. I bought nearly $50 worth of materials, and I didn't have to deal with a human being at all.

BTW, Schlastic's teacher's resources and family activites pages are pretty spectacular! If you're registered, you get free access, and there's some really wonderful material there. A play based on the "Winn Dixie" story, make your own Charlotte's Web comic strip, what would you have built at the WTC site if you were New York's mayor, etc. I was quite impressed and plan to use the site a lot this spring!

Thanks SO MUCH for the tip! It's a gift that keeps on giving. smile

Well, homeschoolers are often treated as a separate group by educational companies. Since we are not paid teachers, they can't count us as such. Yet they also recognize that we ARE teaching and we are good customers for their materials. It's a courtesy they extend to us, and I for one am glad they do!

But I think companies have to right to choose who they sell to. Some companies choose to sell only to a given group. Think of beauty supply stores that choose to sell only to people with beauticians' licenses, for example. Some educational companies do the same thing. Personally, I would prefer that we not make waves about that too much, since if they get trouble, they're more likely to keep out homeschoolers than they are to include everyone. I would HATE that! frown

BTW, afterschoolers and part-time homeschoolers are generally included in the "homeschooler" umbrella. My problem in this particular situation is with the company/employee trying to leave those people out of the homeschooler group.

It may just be a case of offering too much info. Check homeschooler--since even if you're afterschooling and your child goes to public school, that's what you are--and keep moving!

I probably would have been fine if I stuck with online ordering. I got stuck in the muck when I called the rep to order.

The original rep was beautifully kind and wonderful! It was the cranky manager who called me back to tell me there was "a problem with my order" and proceeded to deliver the grand inquisition who was a pain.

I think she did end up feeling bad, though, when she reduced me to tears. Kudos to her, that's not easy to do!

She did end up conceding to attatching some sort of number ID to my log-in stuff, so Glenda the good witch called me back and told me I wouldn't ever have a problem. smile

Glenda also told me they have these sales a few times a year and I am feeling pretty grateful to have been able to purchase the quality of resources I did for so inexpensive..........

But thanks for being so nice.....makes me happy you all are such a caring group. grin

I ordered from the site last year with no issues. Every time I have tried this year the site has been way too slow. Not worth it since I only wanted a couple things.

Wow, neato. I am sorry you had such a bad experience. What exactly is their problem?

I got a call from them this morning to check if I were homeschooler and what grade my kids were in. They said they would go ahead and process my order but I just received an e-mail that they canceled one item from my order. Gee.

What did they cancel? I wonder if they just ran out? Canceling one item seems odd for any other reason!

They canceled Social Studies Activities Kids Can't Resist!

They didn't give me any explanation just said it was canceled. I would have been ok had it said that it was out of stock. I e-mailed them asking why it was canceled.

It's pretty weird. If they run out of it then it shouldn't have been available for purchasing in the first place. There were a few other things I wanted which were sold out when I tried putting them to my shopping card or paying for them. I placed my order on Sunday.
