    Two things:

    * Veterinarian-recommended folded-ear test (new people: see this thread for information).

    I have learned that this test does not work on Siamese kitties. Their ears just flip right back into position. Also, I got the distinct impression that one of my Siamese was going to bite me if I tried to fold his ear again.

    * Bannister jumping

    DKNS (Dear Kitty Not Siamese) has finally lost a lot of weight (took 2 years). He is now "normal" instead of "OMG! He's the fattest cat I've ever seen!!"

    He's gained a lot of energy as part of his new self. Sometimes he does that kitty-thing where he zooms from one place to another for no apparent reason. Another new trick involves jumping onto the bannister on the 2nd floor landing. It's ~3" wide and drops ~7' on one side. No way could he have fit on that bannister when he was pushing 20 lbs. Also, I believe that we are seeing a bit of Macho Cat behavior here.

    Yesterday he combined random zooming with bannister jumping. He raced out of an upstairs bedroom, sprinted down a couple steps and BOUNDED! over the landing to the bannister. Unfortunately, he still carries a bit of bulk around, and it shifted toward his back end during landing. This caused his butt to s w i n g around and over the bannister, which left him dangling above the abyss. I was standing right there when it happened and grabbed him and helped up. So, disaster averted (this time). Soft items have been strategically positioned in the Land Below to avoid disaster next time.

    I just thought you would all want to know.

    Recall, though, Val, that the smartest cats won't let you fold their ears at all. I have tried it on Siamese cats and it has worked. My very un-smart cat was part Siamese, and she left her ear folded for 30 minutes without a problem.

    The test works. You just have smart cats!
